A
group of four forts and associated batteries occupy this portion of
high ground to the north of Paris offering protection to route ways
from the north east and northwest and of course standing on the line of
approach from the north. Two further forts occupy detached hills to the
south east of the main block towards the valley of the La Croud River.
A 'route strategique is marked on the map running east from the Fort de
Domont. Clearly the three main works of Domont, Montlignon and
Montmorency were sited to offer close mutual support on what must have
been seen as a crucial sector of the defences
The
Fort De Domont
is the most northerly of these works. Pentagonal in shape it is
defended by a ditch protected by a double caponier on the north
angle and two caponiers on the 'shoulders'. The fort is currently run
as a
training centre for
the French fire service - the much loved and respected
Sapeurs-Pompiers. Curiously, despite the fact that a training exercise
was underway a casual approach was rewarded with permission to look
around sections of the fort providing we avoided the fires and some of
the tunnels where there were 'big holes' - my translation. As ever
additional information is published with many photographs by the
Index de Fortification Francaise. An outline
local account of the fort's history is on line as are
photos and drawings of the armoured cupolas installed on the site.
